Dog-Friendly Self-Catering Cottages in Norfolk
Not just 'dog-friendly' but positively dog-welcoming! No charges for dogs - ever!
No breed restrictions and in many of the cottages, no limits on dog numbers.
Are you looking for a genuine dog-friendly holiday in Norfolk, close to safe, sandy, dog-friendly beaches, great walks and good, dog-friendly pubs and cafes?
Somewhere that doesn't charge for your dogs, is clean and well-equipped and has a properly enclosed outside area for your dogs to play safely?
Then one of the East Ruston Cottages properties may be just what you are looking for!
Their very dog-friendly properties sleep from 2 to 12 and include a shepherd's hut, annexes, converted barns, family homes, an Arts and Crafts house, and seaside cottages and riverside cabins on the Norfolk Broads.
They are all in a selection of east Norfolk villages including Hickling, Sea Palling, Happisburgh, Hickling and Winterton, East Ruston, Lessingham and Potter Heigham and none very far away from the wonderful quiet coastline here and the Norfolk Broads.
Below are just a few examples.... take a look at the website www.eastrustoncottages.co.uk to see more.
Click here on the 'It's A Dog's Life' page for all the dog-related information you'll need for your holiday plus their very short list of (hardly any!) doggy rules!
Wind In The Willows, East Ruston
Sleeps 2 | Fully Enclosed Garden
Wind in the Willows is a purpose-built Shepherd’s Hut to sleep 2 and two small dogs (or one medium-sized). Very well located for walking and cycling, near beaches and woods.
This quiet corner of North East Norfolk is a real hideaway, yet only 2 miles from the market town of Stalham and with the Weavers Way footpath running through the village just yards away from the hut. Sit outside and enjoy the sunset over the fields and retire to the cosiness of the hut for a decent night's sleep!
Patikipa, Potter Heigham
Sleeps 2 | Max Dogs: 4
Patikipa is a traditional riverside cabin right on the bank of the river at Potter Heigham on the Norfolk Broads. Boat for hire too by arrangement with the owners.
Fully enclosed garden and open quay heading onto the water - not ideal if your dog is a keen swimmer perhaps but ideal to just sit in the sun and watch the boat chug by, the herons and Marsh Harriers flap along and the ducks bobbing past. Fishing is great from here too!
Ideal if you want to holiday on a lower budget but without compromising standards!
Badgers Retreat, East Ruston
Sleeps 2 | Max Dogs: 4
Colourful & spacious single storey annexe which sleeps 2 in a double bedroom. Huge inglenook fireplace for those winter months and sunny conservatory and garden for the sunshine.

Wonderful walks from the door into the Broads National Park alongside the river.
White Cottage, Happisburgh
Sleeps 6 | Max Dogs: 6
One of our most popular cottages with many guests coming back year after year and booking up to 2 years in advance!
Very generously proportioned and beautifully decorated cottage with 2 conservatories and large, very secure garden. Lots of doggy things provided! Close to the dog-friendly beach and pub and shop and yet detached away from other houses. Ideal for reactive dogs or escapers!
Ollands Farm Barn, Happisburgh
Sleeps 2 | Fully Enclosed Garden
Ollands Farm Barn was built in approximately 1709, about 30 years after the farmhouse. It has been lovingly restored to a very high standard and features beamed, vaulted ceilings, wood-burning stove, central heating, quaint (but steep) paddle stairs, comfortable king-size bed in the galleried bedroom and a fully fitted kitchen and shower room with a charming and secure courtyard area
Farthing Cottage, Trunch
Sleeps 4 | Max Dogs: Unlimited
Modern, comfortable and very dog-friendly cottage, open plan living space, underfloor heating, and VERY secure garden. Double and twin rooms. Off a quiet lane in a sleepy village with a dog-friendly pub and village shop. Plenty of countryside walks around and the beaches are a short drive away.

The sandy, dog-friendly beaches are a short drive away.
Red Roofs, Hickling
Sleeps 8 | Max Dogs: 8
Sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms: spacious and rambling detached family home in a beautiful and peaceful location with superb views across Hickling Broad. Spacious, light, and airy rooms. Huge enclosed garden at the back - all grass!
Heather Cottage, Happisburgh
Sleeps 5 | 3 bedrooms
Heather Cottage is a stylish but comfortable three-bedroom cottage in one of the most popular villages in this area - Happisburgh.
It's not only a hop and skip from the local dog-friendly pub, The Hill House, but a lovely stroll to the dog-friendly, sandy beach and plenty of easy countryside walks. The garden is enclosed and dogs are most welcome. The owners live in the village and have 4 dogs of their own so they completely understand how important it is to be properly dog-friendly.
The village also boasts a small shop, wonderful fresh fish shop, some beautiful old buildings and a lot of history...plus plenty of peace and quiet.
Hidden Gem, Winterton
Sleeps 4 | Max Dogs: 4 but flexible
2 Bedroom cottage (double with a sea view and twin room) has the famously dog-friendly Winterton Dunes literally at the back doorstep to enjoy miles of walks on the sandy beach. It's only a short walk to the dog-friendly pub, cafe, and shop (and fish and chips!). Understandably one of our most popular houses!
Rooster Barn, Trunch
Sleeps 4 | Max Dogs: UNLIMITED
A beautiful barn conversion at the end of a private drive. Large secure fenced garden. Ground floor double ensuite bedroom + kingsize/twin room in the rafters.
Hook up point for a caravan too! Seriously dog-friendly and very popular.
Holmes House, East Ruston
Sleeps 4 | Max Dogs: UNLIMITED
Situated right on the Weavers Way footpath so walks from the door are very easy. Peaceful and tucked away down a dead-end lane with no passing traffic. A very secure, fully enclosed garden. You can park inside, shut the gate and let the dogs out, knowing they will be safe
Orchard Cottage, Happisburgh
Sleeps 5 | Max Dogs: UNLIMITED
Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms. Located in the heart of the historic village and close to the sandy beach, local dog-friendly pub, and the iconic lighthouse. Large, private, and totally secure garden and off-road parking.
One of our most popular houses! Loved by the regulars and new guests alike.
St Benets, Sea Palling
Sleeps 10-12 | 5 Bedrooms
St Benets is a very nicely appointed family house, well furnished and a very short walk from the sandy Blue Flag beach at Sea Palling, a small seaside resort with a dog-friendly pub, village shop, fish and chips, dog-friendly cafe and one small amusement arcade.
The beach is protected by rock reefs which form calmer areas of water along the main part of the beach and are ideal for swimming. It is perfect for dog walking and whilst there are restrictions in place from May to September it is only to the left of the access ramp; to the right, you can walk the dogs for miles on the beach and in the dunes and stop off at nearby Waxham Barns for a coffee or further on to Nelson's Head at Horsey for a drink. Seals are a common sight along this stretch of coast.
The house has a contemporary and elegant feel but also manages to be homely and comfortable with many of the original Victorian features retained.
It can sleep up to 12 in 5 bedrooms, although an ideal number would probably be between 6 and 10.

The whole property gives you a sense of space with high ceilings and big rooms and underfloor heating just about everywhere. The 3 bedrooms are generous and all en suite with plenty of drawer space, although only the small twin has a wardrobe so hanging space is a bit limited.
The lounge has 2 comfy 3 seater settees and an arm chair and there was plenty of space for us to have a couple of crates (provided by ERC) in there, always useful to save bringing them in and out of the car every time you go out. A good size TV (we brought our own Firestick which is a good tip) and a dining table for 6 are also in this room. There is also a huge table and benches outside as well as a gas barbecue.
The kitchen was a good size and really well fitted out with good quality shaker style units, a dishwasher, washing machine, double oven/grill, microwave and a separate fridge and freezer. It was a useful size freezer, which came with a bag of ice, but we found that the fridge was really only big enough to store supplies for a few days rather than the whole week. (Especially when you get a few beers and bottles of wine in there). Plenty of pots, pans, crockery and glasses to keep you going for a few meals too.
Plenty of doggie goodies, with blankets, towels, bowls and toys and masses of space to run around in the garden.
Just a few minutes from the huge beach at Walcott/Bacton and we’ll positioned to travel to Mundesley and Cromer to the north or just down the coast to Happisburgh and Sea Palling.
Plenty of great dog friendly cafes nearby too, including Sugar and Spice at Bacton, The Dunes at Waxham Barn and Hatters Tea Shop in Cromer. All these had a good gluten free selection too.
The kitchen gorgeous with lots of space.
Both us and our rescue dog were made to feel very welcome and nothing really was too much trouble even helping me book a birthday surprise for my mum.
Lovely outside area and grassed orchard
Such a relief to be able to leave the back doors open knowing the dogs can run around the huge dog-safe rear garden without doing any damage or getting lost. Lots of outdoor seating for the sunny times in the gardens maintained by the lovely Jimmy.
The kitchen is full of quality equipment, should you need it. There are carpets! This is great if your dog doesn’t like hard floors (like ours). It really is a home from home and that’s why we just keep on coming back...
